How to File Your First Return

Oh wow, I actually did it! Filing your first Canadian tax return feels like a mountain, but it's really just a series of small hills. I remember staring at the CRA website for hours, but once you break it down, it actually makes sense!

Common Questions

Filing FAQ: My First Time!

Do I really need to file if I didn't earn much?

I used to think that if I earned under $15,000, I could just skip it. But wait! Even if you have zero income, filing is how you get those sweet GST/HST credits and the carbon tax rebate. If you don't file, the government just keeps that money. Can you believe that?

What is a T4 and where do I find it?

A T4 is basically your "statement of remuneration." Your employer usually sends this by the end of February. I was so confused when I saw all those boxes like Box 14 and Box 24, but those numbers are exactly what the software asks for! Check out the Employment and RRSP Deductions page for more info on work papers.

Can I file online for my very first time?

Yes! Mostly! In the past, first-timers had to mail paper forms, but now the CRA's NETFILE system is super friendly to newcomers. As long as they have your date of birth and SIN on file, you are good to go. It's so much faster than the old-school way!

Software Options

NETFILE Certified Software

Wealthsimple Tax

This is what I used! It’s a "pay-what-you-want" model, which is amazing for students or people on a budget. The interface is so clean, it almost feels like a social media app instead of a tax tool.

  • + Auto-fill my return
  • + Mobile friendly
  • + Crypto support

TurboTax Canada

Probably the most famous one out there. They have a free version for simple returns, but it gets pricey if you have a lot of non-refundable tax credits or business income.

  • + High reliability
  • + Expert review options
  • + Step-by-step wizard

UFile

A classic choice for many Canadians. It’s very robust and handles complex family situations really well. I’ve heard their customer support is great if you get stuck on a weird question.

  • + Family head accounts
  • + Long history
  • + Windows/Web versions

CRA My Account Setup

Setting this up was the scariest part for me! You have to prove who you are, and it takes two steps. First, you register, and then they actually mail you a physical letter with a code. Wait, what? Yes, a real paper letter in 2024!

  1. 01. Visit the CRA website and choose "Register" under My Account.
  2. 02. Enter your SIN, date of birth, and a figure from your current return (if you've filed before).
  3. 03. Wait 5-10 business days for your security code to arrive in the mail.
"I didn't realize that without My Account, you can't see your Notice of Assessment or track your refund status easily. It's a must-have!"

Critical Deadlines

Event Date Why it matters
RRSP Contribution Deadline February 29 (approx) Last day to reduce last year's taxable income.
General Filing Deadline April 30 The big day! File by midnight to avoid late penalties.
Self-Employed Deadline June 15 You get more time to file, but interest on taxes owed starts May 1.

*Statistical Note: Did you know roughly 90% of Canadians now file their taxes electronically? It used to be all paper!

Oops, I made a mistake!

How to Fix Errors

So, you clicked "submit" and then realized you forgot a T5 slip from your savings account? Don't panic! I did the exact same thing. The first rule of tax club: Do NOT file a second return. That just confuses the CRA and delays everything.

Instead, you have to wait until you receive your official Notice of Assessment (NOA). Once you have that, you can use the "Change my Return" feature in CRA My Account. It’s surprisingly simple! You just find the line number you need to change, enter the new amount, and explain why.

If you haven't set up My Account yet, you can also mail a Form T1-ADJ (T1 Adjustment Request). It takes longer—sometimes up to 8 weeks—but it gets the job done. For more on how the CRA checks these things, read about CRA Reviews and Documentation.

Pro Tip:

If you find an error that means you owe more money, fix it as soon as possible. The CRA charges interest daily on unpaid balances, and that can add up fast!

Ready to get your refund?

It’s not as scary as it looks, I promise! Whether you’re in British Columbia or anywhere else in Canada, the process is pretty much the same. Just take it one box at a time!
